Empowering Communities Through Inclusive Sports
At MegChem, our commitment to excellence extends beyond engineering solutions. We believe in the power of community and the importance of giving back. This philosophy is embodied in our “Beyond Engineering” initiative, which encourages our employees to lend a hand in the community. A recent highlight of this initiative was an inspiring event led by Christi-Arno Nel, MegChem’s Senior Construction Manager, who hosted an archery workshop for girls at Hoërskool Oosterland on April 10 and 11, 2024.
Archery Workshop: A New Avenue for Inclusivity
The workshop was more than just a lesson in archery. It was an opportunity to promote inclusivity in sports, addressing a gap in school sports that often focuses on physical talent-based activities like soccer, netball, rugby.
By introducing archery, Christi-Arno and MegChem opened doors for students who may not be able to participate in these physically demanding sports, providing them with an alternative that they can excel in and enjoy.
The Workshop Experience
The two-day event was meticulously planned and executed, ensuring that each participant not only learned the basics of archery but also felt included and empowered. The workshop covered:
- Fundamentals of Archery: From proper stance and grip to aiming and shooting techniques, the girls were taught how to hold and shoot a bow and arrow correctly.
- Safety First: Emphasizing the importance of safety, Christi-Arno ensured that each participant understood the safety protocols essential for archery.
- Inclusive Sports Discussion: A significant part of the workshop was dedicated to discussing the importance of inclusive sports. Christi-Arno highlighted how sports like archery can provide a platform for students who may not find their place in more physically demanding sports.
- Q&A Session: The workshop concluded with a lively Q&A session, where the girls had the opportunity to ask questions and gain deeper insights into archery and the importance of inclusivity in sports.
To cap off the event, participants were given gifts, and there was a short free shooting practice session. This allowed the girls to apply what they had learned in a relaxed and supportive environment, further building their confidence and enthusiasm for the sport.
Building Community Through Engagement
MegChem’s Beyond Engineering initiative aims to foster community engagement and development. Events like the archery workshop not only equip young individuals with new skills but also promote values of inclusivity, teamwork, and personal growth.
We are incredibly proud of Christi-Arno Nel for his dedication and initiative. His efforts reflect MegChem’s broader mission to enhance the expertise of our team and contribute positively to our community. By nurturing such initiatives, we hope to create a ripple effect that encourages more inclusive and supportive environments in schools and beyond.
Looking Forward
The success of the archery workshop at Hoërskool Oosterland is just one example of how MegChem is making a difference in the community. We are committed to continuing our Beyond Engineering initiative, creating more opportunities for our employees to share their skills and passions, and making a positive impact wherever we can.
