CLEAN FUEL II PROJECT

MegChem has proudly reached a significant 3 million safe man-hours-worked safety milestone during the execution of the Clean Fuels II Project at Sasol Secunda. This achievement stands as a reflection of strong leadership, disciplined planning, and an unshakable commitment to put safety above all else. In an environment where high-risk activities are the norm, MegChem proved that large-scale execution can still be driven by care, accountability, and world-class safety practices.

Leadership That Put People First

Managing such a large and diverse workforce required both structure and foresight. Portfolio Manager, Daan Coetzer implemented a strategy that divided the workforce into smaller and more manageable sections. This enabled stronger control, improved communication, and more focused supervision, ensuring that safety remained a top priority across every corner of the site.

Planning, Communication, and Daily Action

This achievement didn’t happen by chance it was the result of:

  • Thorough planning at every project stage
  • Clear safety guidelines that were followed without exception
  • Visible leadership with management performing regular site walks and setting measurable safety goals
  • Open channels of communication across all teams, ensuring risks were discussed and addressed in real time
  • A strong “Safety First” culture that empowered workers to stop work, speak up, and support each other

This culture fostered collaboration, accountability, and unity, essential ingredients in reaching the 3 million man-hour mark without injuries.

Execution Without Compromise

The scope of the Clean Fuels II Project was immense. From design to final commissioning, MegChem’ s role demanded seamless integration of engineering design, construction, and quality control. Some of the project figures that define the magnitude of this milestone include:

  • Over 9681 technical drawings produced, reviewed, and managed across disciplines.
  • 1387 cubic meters of concrete poured for civil works and foundation infrastructure
  • 652 tons of structural steel fabricated and installed.
  • Approximately 157 kilometers of piping were installed across the site.
  • Roughly 46 323 meters of electrical cabling installed.
  • Roughly 95 813 meters of instrumentation cabling installed.

Working Toward a Greener, Safer Future

The Baseline Improvement Project (BIP) basket of projects was selected as the preferred upgrade to enable the Secunda facility to produce Clean Fuels II (Euro VI) specification motor fuel. Beyond safety, the Clean Fuels II Project was executed in collaboration with numerous partners and sub-contractors adhering to the client as well as international standards, reflecting MegChem’s long-term commitment to sustainability.

A Legacy of Excellence

MegChem’s 3 million safe man-hours represent more than just excellent performance, they symbolize a company culture rooted in care, discipline, and shared purpose. The milestone sets a new standard not only for project execution but for what it means to lead people, safety, and the future in mind. As MegChem looks ahead, one principle remains clear: Safety is not the end goal, it is the foundation of every project, every decision and every action. It’s the MegChem Way!
