2023 Bridge Building Competition
MegChem’s Projects & Mechanical department recently showcased their prowess at the 2023 Company Bridge Building Competition. Hosted by The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) Highveld branch, this event brought together companies from various sectors to participate in a unique and thrilling display of design and construction skills. MegChem not only accepted the challenge but excelled with two teams, crafting bridges that stood as a testament to their engineering expertise.
Event Overview
The event, held on the 10th of November 2023 at the Sasol Club Secunda, was a fusion of competition and camaraderie. The competition format was modified to ensure a dynamic experience, with companies encouraged to enter multiple teams, each comprising 2 to 5 members.
Two weeks prior to the event, MegChem and other participating companies received a special delivery – a dispatch of building materials meticulously curated according to established guidelines. This foresight allowed our teams ample time to hone their designs and construct bridges that would undergo rigorous evaluation and testing during the competition.
The competition’s challenge was to create bridges spanning more than 660mm using 4mm x 4mm wood pieces, each only 600mm long. Our team embraced diverse concepts, blending key design elements into a final design. A meticulous cutting list ensured we maximized limited supplies. The experience proved invaluable, offering insights into material strength and the impact of reinforcement on overall bridge strength.
The Mechanical Drawing Office secured third place, bearing an impressive 177.8kg load before a minor assembly error led to our bridge’s premature failure. Despite this setback, the competition provided valuable lessons, setting the stage for an even stronger design next year.
Competition Highlights
Our teams, fueled by enthusiasm and a passion for engineering, embraced the challenge with zeal. The extended preparation period facilitated the creation of bridges that not only met but exceeded expectations. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail were evident in every joint and beam, showcasing the company’s commitment to excellence.
The competition wasn’t just about engineering precision; it was a platform to unwind from the corporate routine and foster a sense of camaraderie within the industry. The event not only celebrated MegChem’s engineering prowess but also provided an opportunity to engage with other companies, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and collaboration.
Networking and Fun
Beyond the competitive arena, the event provided a relaxed environment for networking and relationship-building. The braai that followed the competition allowed participants to unwind, share experiences, and forge connections that extend beyond the structural confines of bridges.
